Compliment a stranger. How does it make you feel?

Share your compliment to a stranger below!

I felt it was only right to make this post at the end of my day, when I had completed the task and could truly reflect on how it felt.

After work I went for a walk around my neighborhood. Every morning when I leave for work and every evening on my way home, I see this woman in my neighborhood walking/running. Rain or shine she is out there. Today we passed each other on the sidewalk and we said hello. I paused for a moment before saying “I see you walking a lot and I admire your discipline and determination.” I could tell she was taken off guard by this, I was surprised I actually said it too. She smiled and said thanks, that it was her stress relief. Then she smiled again, this time it was more to herself than to me.

Today was a hectic day. There was so much going on and so much on my mind that I almost forgot to compliment a stranger. As I passed by this woman, I knew that I wanted to compliment her, and I wanted it to be on something more than her outfit. After I complimented her, my thoughts slowed down a little. I took in the simplicity of their smile, of that moment. I forgot about how hectic my thoughts had been prior and I smiled.

The days go by so fast and we rarely take time to compliment ourselves and our loved ones, never mind a complete stranger. I know that talking to a stranger can bring on a lot of anxiety; you don’t want anyone to think you are strange and you don’t want to make anyone feel uncomfortable. But 9 times out of 10, when you genuinely compliment a stranger, they accept it as whole heartedly as you gave it.

Today’s challenge reminded me how just a little bit of courage and effort can bring a lot of joy.

  1. As a server, I’m always saying things to get a smile out of those at my table. Today I was extra conscious of my comments and sure to include a compliment with all my tables! One that really stood out to me was when I complimented a girl on her hockey jersey (pasta babyy) and it got us talking. By the end we exchanged numbers and plan to go snowboarding Friday!! It’s crazy how fast connections can be made when you take that extra leap!

    1. Amanda, I absolutely love that you were able to build a true connection from a compliment!! That is what this is truly about! You are one of the most extraordinary people I have ever met. The love you have and share with the world is never ending and it truly is a better place with you in it. I strive to be more open to connecting with strangers as you are!!

  2. Working in service, I’m talking with strangers all day over the phone and via email. Among my coworkers, I’m known to chat it UP with our travelers and get pretty personal. Yesterday I was reaching out to this woman (Wilma, how freaking adorable) about her Australia tour. She told me she wasn’t really even interested in going there since she’s already been, but her friend never has and is afraid to go alone so she agreed to go with her. This is a $10k commitment people. I immediately told her how great of a friend she is and that may seem like not a big deal to some but that she should know how special she is. Not many people are willing to go out of their way for others meanwhile this woman is willing to fly literally across the world and spend a very pretty penny to be sure her friend experiences something she has always dreamed of. This got me thinking about my own relationships and how I really want to show the people I love that I would *literally* go to the ends of the earth for them, just like Wilma.
